Our society has become highly reliant on Internet technologies,
a tendency that will continue to increase in the future. Given
this importance, it is fundamental that Internet systems be made
significantly more reliable, secure, and efficient. In large-scale
settings, these characterictics are very difficult
to realize, verify, and evaluate. In particular, designing large-scale
Internet systems has to deal with aspects usually overlooked in small
contexts such as algorithm scalability, heterogeneity of the
components forming the Internet, and user trustworthiness.
Overcoming these difficulties can only be accomplished by the
collaboration of researchers with varied backgrounds working
toward a common goal.
The seminar has the following objectives:
-
Providing an opportunity for scientists from
different research centers to meet and understand their
research interests and current research projects.
-
Creating a common background for all participants on the
seminar themes.
-
Identifying problems of interest for researchers of both
countries, sketching common directions for future research
involving members from Japanese and Swiss institutions, and
determining how each researcher's domain of expertise can play
a role in the design of Internet systems.
-
Establishing contacts for future long-term visits of
scientists working in Japan to Swiss research institutions,
and scientists working in Switzerland to Japanese research
institutions.
-
Laying the basis for exchange programs for PhD and
Master Students of Japanese and Swiss institutions.
